title: Hermes plugin | Adaption
description: Connect Hermes Agent to Adaption with the hosted MCP server and skills for dataset and model-training workflows.
---

The Adaption plugin for [Hermes Agent](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com) adds workflow skills for datasets, synthetic data generation, and AutoScientist. The tools come from the [Adaption MCP server](/tools/mcp/index.md), which you add to Hermes separately and sign in to with your Adaption account in the browser.

The setup has two parts because the plugin format Hermes installs cannot request OAuth for an MCP server. Hermes signs in only to servers configured with `auth: oauth`, so the server is added with those settings and the plugin carries only the skills.

The plugin requires Hermes Agent with Agent Plugins support. Run `hermes update` to get the latest version.

## Hermes Desktop

### 1. Add the MCP server

Open this link in Hermes Desktop. It pre-fills the server for you to confirm:

```
hermes://mcp/install?name=adaption&config=eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL2FwaS5wcm9kLmFkYXB0aW9ubGFicy5haS9hcGkvdjEvbWNwP3NvdXJjZT1oZXJtZXMtcGx1Z2luIiwiaGVhZGVycyI6eyJYLUFkYXB0aW9uLVNvdXJjZSI6Imhlcm1lcy1wbHVnaW4ifSwiYXV0aCI6Im9hdXRoIiwib2F1dGgiOnsiY2xpZW50X2lkIjoiYWRhcHRpb24taGVybWVzLXBsdWdpbiJ9fQ
```

Or open **Capabilities → Connectors → Add your own**, choose **Edit mcp.json**, and add:

```
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "adaption": {
      "url": "https://api.prod.adaptionlabs.ai/api/v1/mcp?source=hermes-plugin",
      "headers": {
        "X-Adaption-Source": "hermes-plugin"
      },
      "auth": "oauth",
      "oauth": {
        "client_id": "adaption-hermes-plugin"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

The `oauth` block is required. Adaption does not support dynamic client registration, which Hermes falls back to without it.

### 2. Sign in

Select **Authenticate** on the `adaption` server, then **Open in browser**. Sign in, choose the organization, and select **Authorize**.

### 3. Install the skills

Open **Capabilities → Plugins → Install from Git**, enter `adaptionlabs/adaption-hermes-plugin`, keep the agent plugin checked, and confirm. Then enable **adaption** in the plugins list.

Or open this link:

```
hermes://plugin/install?repo=adaptionlabs/adaption-hermes-plugin&enable=1
```

Both links only open a confirmation dialog in Hermes Desktop. Nothing is installed until you confirm.

## Hermes CLI

### 1. Add the MCP server

Terminal window

```
hermes config set mcp_servers.adaption.url 'https://api.prod.adaptionlabs.ai/api/v1/mcp?source=hermes-plugin'
hermes config set mcp_servers.adaption.headers.x-adaption-source hermes-plugin
hermes config set mcp_servers.adaption.auth oauth
hermes config set mcp_servers.adaption.oauth.client_id adaption-hermes-plugin
hermes mcp login adaption
```

Hermes opens the Adaption sign-in page. Choose the organization and select **Authorize**. Hermes caches the tokens and refreshes them automatically. To sign in again later, for example to switch organizations, run `hermes mcp login adaption`.

On a remote host, follow the Hermes guide for OAuth over SSH, or use an API key as described below.

### 2. Install the skills

Terminal window

```
hermes plugins install adaptionlabs/adaption-hermes-plugin --no-enable
hermes plugins enable adaption
```

Start a new session, or run `/reload-mcp` in a running one, to load the tools.

## Verify the connection

Ask Hermes:

> List my Adaption datasets.

Hermes should use `list_datasets` from the Adaption MCP server.

## Headless use with an API key

For CI or a gateway with no one to complete a browser sign-in, use an [Adaption API key](/introduction/create-api-keys/index.md) instead of OAuth:

Terminal window

```
hermes mcp add adaption --url 'https://api.prod.adaptionlabs.ai/api/v1/mcp?source=hermes-plugin' --auth header
```

Answer yes when Hermes asks whether the server requires authentication, then paste the API key when it asks for a bearer token. Hermes stores it in your profile’s `.env` as `MCP_ADAPTION_API_KEY`, not in `config.yaml`. To skip the prompt, set `MCP_ADAPTION_API_KEY` in that `.env` before running the command.

## What the plugin adds

The plugin contains three skills and no code:

- `adaption-dataset` — Guides dataset import, adaptation, augmentation, translation, localization, combination, and export workflows.
- `adaption-invent` — Guides synthetic dataset generation from natural-language requirements.
- `adaption-training` — Guides AutoScientist model selection, hyperparameter recommendations, training, and monitoring.

The skills tell Hermes to request a cost estimate before launching an operation that spends credits. Hermes does not enforce this. See [MCP](/tools/mcp/index.md) for the complete tool catalog.
